As a Business Development Intern at Latte, I contributed significantly to their mission of revolutionizing mentorship. Latte is dedicated to streamlining and enriching the mentorship experience, striving to make it as straightforward and enjoyable as ordering your favorite coffee. My role was pivotal in identifying and developing new avenues for growth. This involved strategically cultivating and nurturing partnerships that were in harmony with Latte's vision of democratizing mentorship and making it accessible to a broader audience. My efforts were centered on expanding Latte's reach and impact in the mentorship domain, ensuring that our services resonated with and met the diverse needs of our users.

Problem

In the dynamic world of mentorship platforms, Latte faced the challenge of standing out in a sector filled with a variety of offerings. The critical question we addressed was:

How can we elevate Latte's presence and distinguish it in the online mentorship industry, thereby forging unique and impactful connections?
Strategy

Our strategy kicked off with an exhaustive analysis of the mentorship industry. We delved into:

  • In-Depth Market Research: Conducted a comprehensive study of competitor platforms like ADPlist and Criya, examining their strategies and market positioning.
  • Identification of Unique Opportunities: Pinpointed areas where Latte could distinctively position itself, focusing on untapped partnership opportunities and market gaps.
Methods

Our strategy was multi-pronged, encompassing:

  1. Competitive Landscape Analysis: Systematically evaluated the approaches of competitors, understanding their strengths, weaknesses, and market tactics.
  2. Partnership Exploration: Investigated potential collaborations with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) groups and organizations, aiming to broaden Latte's impact and reach diverse audiences.
  3. Data-Driven Modeling: Crafted detailed user, cost, and revenue projection models. These models served as a foundation for our strategic planning, providing insights into potential growth trajectories and financial planning.

This approach allowed us to build a comprehensive strategy that not only addressed current market needs but also positioned Latte as a leader in the mentorship domain, ready to tackle future industry shifts.

Through our comprehensive analysis, we gained several crucial insights:

  1. Uniqueness in Mentorship: The attractiveness of a mentorship platform is significantly enhanced by offering unique and personalized mentorship experiences. This differentiation is key in capturing user interest in a crowded market.

During the ideation phase, we concentrated on devising distinct and forward-thinking strategies to boost Latte’s standing in the mentorship arena. Our focus areas included:

  1. Developing Tailored Mentorship Experiences: We aimed to design bespoke mentorship journeys that cater to the specific aspirations and challenges of early-career professionals. This included creating personalized mentorship pathways, like industry-specific guidance and skill-focused mentorship sessions, ensuring that each user's experience is uniquely aligned with their professional goals.
  2. Harnessing Strategic Partnerships: We explored opportunities to collaborate with renowned educational institutions, professional organizations, and industry leaders. The objective was to integrate their expertise into our mentorship programs, thus providing users with access to a wider range of resources and insights.
  3. Expanding Mentorship Offerings through Alliances: We planned to extend Latte’s mentorship services by establishing alliances with key educational and professional bodies. This would involve collaborative workshops, webinars, and joint mentorship initiatives, thereby creating a richer, more diverse mentorship environment.
  4. Innovating Mentorship Engagement Models: We proposed the introduction of novel mentorship formats to engage users more effectively. Ideas included setting up specialized mentorship tracks, such as leadership development or entrepreneurship, and implementing interactive activities like mentor-led group discussions, mentor-mentee project collaborations, and real-world challenge simulations to foster a more dynamic and practical learning experience.
Solution

To address the challenge of growing Latte’s reach, we executed the following strategies:

  • Conducted extensive market research and competitive analysis to gain a deep understanding of the mentorship landscape, identifying areas ripe for innovation and collaboration.
  • Built relationships with a variety of groups, including DEI organizations like 100 Black Men of America, to diversify and extend our network.
  • Drew on insights from direct experiences with competitor platforms, allowing us to refine Latte’s offerings and position them uniquely in the market.
Results

During Winter 2023-24, my work led to several impactful developments for Latte:

  • Enhancement of a comprehensive user, cost, and revenue projection model, enhancing the informational depth of our data room for current and prospective investors.
  • Development and presentation of a competitive research deck to investors, emphasizing the value of firsthand experience with competitor apps, providing deeper, more nuanced insights.
  • Identification of collaborations with DEI groups, expanding Latte's reach and solidifying its commitment to inclusive mentorship.
Learnings

This journey provided valuable insights:

  • Competitive Insight: A deep understanding of the mentorship market and competitor strategies was crucial. Analyzing platforms like ADPlist and Criya helped refine our unique value proposition.
  • Strategic Collaboration: The effectiveness of strategic partnerships was evident. Seeing the benefits of collaborating with organizations like 100 Black Men of America not only broadened our horizons but also enriched type of the mentorship experiences we could potentially offer.
